The new Canada's Food Guide was finally released on Feb. 5, 2007, updating the version that was introduced more than 15 years ago!

Summary of the new Canada's Food Guide (servings)

The New & Improved Food Guide

Upon investigation, we really like the newly released Food Guide.

  • It's got something for everybody
The new Food Guide recommends healthy eating not only for adults but also for children as young as two years of age.

  • Cheer for colorful Vegetables & Fruit group
The Vegetables & Fruit group is placed at the top of the Food Guide in the new version. In addition, it recognizes the benefits of eating green leafy vegetables replacing the green salad in the old version.

  • A less confusing guide to Grains
The biggest complain of the old version was that it was confusing as it listed some grains in one serving and other in two servings. We are happy that new Food Guide is easy to understand. In addition, whole grains are emphasized in the new version.

  • Updated with popular foods
Popular food items such as salmon, shellfish, soy milk, nuts and seeds are now included in the Food Guide, making it easy for us who adopt a modern way of eating.

The new Canada's Food Guide is consistent with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Both emphasize the importance of eating a variety of foods from the food groups. The Canada's Food Guide also briefly addresses the nutrition issues with children, women of childbearing age, as well as adults over 50 years of age.
