Hi Readers,
Poor old goodhealth has probably died from old age while waiting for a reply!!!!! The normal American diet supplies more than enough protein for 97.5% of the people, the average person only requires 0.8 grammes of protein per kilogram of body weight, even weight lifters and other resistant exercise trainers do not require more because protein is used to make muscle and it is very efficiently used. Endurance trainers require more protein and their requirement is in the order of 1 to 1.2 grammes per kilogram of body weight per day. The body can make all of the amino acids required for protein synthesis other than 9 ( histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan & valine). Vegans that do not know how to blend proteins can get into trouble because some plants are lacking certain amino acids, for instance legumes lack methionine and grains lack lysine. All food coming from an animal source contain complete protein. The biggest problem is not enough protein but an excess which can cause the kidneys to become compromised particularly as we age a bit. Problems begin to appear once you go over 2.00 grammes per kilo of body weight per day and at 2.5 grammes/kg/day you are in trouble. Research has shown a correlation with very high protein intake and urinary excretion of calcium, not good when you are trying to avoid osteoporosis. Hope this reply is good enough for you goodhealth if you are still around, I too left this one thinking someone else, better qualified would have a go at it. Didn't realise you were so qualified, apologies. Can you tell me what is the best course of action when a person chokes on their own smugness?

Hi Butterfly Lily,
I would organise a good BBQ and attempt to wash it down with a liberal dose of cabernet sauvignon 2003 vintage, I find it always works. -------------------- John Bobbin BNat, ND, DNutSc, DHerbMed, DHM, DRM, DSM- " All truth must be supported by evidence so if we can't prove it we should remove it."
