Hi. I've been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia and have to take iron supplements (an iron rich diet will not cut it). I know I have to take them, but I'm afraid that I'll get sick, because I have acid reflux. I have to take 2 65 mg. pills a day, but my doctor says that I can start with one, if I get sick. Has anyone had experience with this? Do iron supplements always cause illness, or have I just scared myself? My doc says if they cause nausea to take them at night, but that's when my reflux is the worse. Thanks!
Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) cause a decrease in the number of red blood cells due to the like of iron.
Iron is loss by excessive hemorrhage as in trauma, long term heavy menstruation, ulcers and some cancers.
Treatment includes supplements and a iron rich diet. Iron supplements (ferrous sulfate) is best absorbed on an empty stomach, but some people can not tolerate this, and must take it with food. If it still can't be tolerated. it can be given intravenously (IV). At any rate, a diet rich in iron should eaten. This diet includes red meat, liver, raisins, spinach, broccoli, egg yolks and legumes. Ed Stevens. RN
