My friend has a gout problem. It trigger once in a while. He blames eating too much fish. His doctor believes fish is one that contribute his gout problem. I am not quiet sure if this is true or not. Maybe some fish are but not all the seafood. I know red meat (pork, beef, livestock or chicken thigh etc..) are also contribute gout problem. But what about alcohol ? Some say that red wine or too much beer are also the main factor. But I think the more you drink any alcohol, the more gout problem will trigger. Please correct me if my understand are not right . Thanks. smile.gif

Hi Loloyski,
Is your friend fat? Being overweight and over-eating are both causes of gout. Gout is caused by the production of uric acid chrystals and often controlling it is as simple as better flushing of the kidneys with more water. Purine producing foods such as offal meats, liver, shellfish, mussels, sardines, scallops, herring, mackeral , anchovies and beer have long been thought to cause gout, but there is not much scientific evidence to suggest avoiding them will prevent gout.

Binge drinking or excessive drinking of alcohol all also suspected of causing gout. Loosing weight quickly is another cause, so if your friend is over weight he/she should lose it slowly. As a Naturopath I always prescribe dark cherries, about 400 gms per week to be eaten, the Anthocyanadins are believed to prevent the chrystals forming.

Often gout is confused with pseudogout, even by doctors, pseudogout is caused by the formation of calcium pyrophosphate chrystals and will require different treatment.

Gout can be prevented, and the first step is to establish a good lifestyle, diet and exercise, and talking to a dietitian, remember overeating and rapid weight loss are both known causes of gout. Left untreated gout will permanently damage joints.

If you can't control it by diet, lifestyle and exercise doctors have drugs that can control it, but they will have to be taken daily regardless of whether you are having an attack or not, so I would get serious about the natural option and give it a good try, but you can't exercise while you still have chrystals in the joints or you will cause joint damage.

I hope this helps.
