um.....i have a nutrition degree (not dietetics) and i graduated 3 years ago. i actually haven't figured out what i really like to do or to be - i just like to stay in the health or nutrition field. any suggestions? what options do i have?
Gloria
um.....i'm more familiar with the health professional route and i think ian and judy are more familiar with academic and research.

there are a couple of options with your nutrition degree - you can certainly move on directly to a MSc in Nutrition or MSc in Food Science. Spoke personnel of most nutrition or food corporations have at least an MSc degree.

you may also go back to university to get a few credits to become eligible for the dietetics program. with your nutrition degree, you probably don't need to do too many courses. then apply for a dietetic internship program with your chosen hospital and obtain your license as a registered dietician.

certainly, you can apply to get into med school with your degree and a MCAT exam.

good luck!
Ian
Wanted to add to Gloria's excellent points. With a nutrition background, I know many people who went into sales of vitamins and supplements. This is also another option if it suits your personality. The next time you walk by a GNC or your local health food store, go in and talk to the sales staff. They will be able to give you a better idea of health products industry.

Good luck!
Judy
Hi Ahyan,

We all need to eat. We need people to monitor the safety of our food supply and find ways to improve the safety, nutritional value, and taste of our foods.

If you like to find out more about what food scientists and food technologists do, visit this site:

Best wishes!

Hi Everyone,
I always found this post inspirational, in fact I read this post several times before I joined the first time in 2006, I changed email email providers and wasn't recognised by the forum, so had to rejoin. This post is now relevant to what's happening in my life, a professor from Southern Cross University, that I lectured for in the early eighties has contacted me several times to do a MSc by research. he wants to research the synergy of practice,

I am still trying to make up my mind about whether I want to do another degree. I have a lot more miles on the clock than Annie (Ahyan916), in fact my 2 boys are probably both older than her, so this is not so much a career thing, although it could help there as well as I feel I will be working for a long time yet, and extra qualifications have never damaged a career. For me it would be more about personal development and being instrumental in moving this research forward.

How long did it take you Ian/Judy to do your MSc by research, Prof. Stephen Myers informs me that it is worth 2 years of full time work. Was it worthwhile, another problem for me is the distance to the Uni, it's at the other end of the state and I would have to do some seminars up there, the bulk of face to face could be done via Jabber/Skype on the internet.

Cheers biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi John, it's so inspirational to learn that you are thinking about school. I know that our Assistant Editor Sofia completed her MPH in 2 years and another girlfriend of mine did her MS in Nutrition in 3 years. I think our former moderator Judy did her MS + PhD in 7 years.

I always believe that we don't have to always do things in life just for career only - it could be personal interest as well and that's why John I command you for your courage to consider school again! Please keep us posted on your journey!

Thanks Gloria,

I will.
