Drug addiction is a complicated disease that overwhelms both the
addict and those who love him. After abusing drugs for a period of
time, the user becomes both physically and emotionally dependent upon
the drug. Understanding the differences between drug abuse and drug
dependence, and how the two relate to one another, is vital in helping
the addict recover from this devastating disease.

That is a very cold, technical explanation. Aren't you forgetting the human side of things...have you ever been addicted to drugs?

Hi Guys,

Drug addiction is a lot more complicated than most people believe, you can take a very shallow view of it and come up with all sorts of simple solutions, but it doesn't really work like that, it is very complicated. Sure the initial choice to take or not to take drugs in the first place, is absolutely in the hands of the addict, but drugs alter the structure of the brain making it a disease.

I think the most commonly abused drugs in Hawaii are cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. They’re the most distributed illegal drugs in the state so I guess it’s pretty sensible to guess that they’re also the most commonly abused drugs.

Hi crosbycott,

It depends on your perspective, what about the damage caused by alcohol and nicotine, to families, road accidents, anti-social behaviour, health and wealth. These drugs, while not being illegal drugs (and initially the post did not mention legality or otherwise), they do exact a terrible price on societies and families.

Drug addiction treatment centers provide rehabilitation services for drug addiction, alcoholism, and co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. Finding the most appropriate drug treatment center or alcohol rehab program for an individual's specific needs can be a daunting task. A great deal of information about drug addiction treatment and addiction recovery already exists on the internet, but is often difficult to navigate to find useful information.

The drug abuse and addiction have so many dimensions and disrupt so many aspects of an individual's life, treatment is not simple. Effective treatment programs typically incorporate many components, each directed to a particular aspect of the illness and its consequences. Addiction treatment must help the individual stop using drugs, maintain a drug-free lifestyle, and achieve productive functioning in the family, at work, and in society. Because addiction is typically a chronic disease, people cannot simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Most patients require long-term or repeated episodes of care to achieve the ultimate goal of sustained abstinence and recovery of their lives.
