I have recently been reading about the benefits of whole flax seed. Does anyone have recipes other than those for muffins or breads? Thanks

hi i think most of the recipes out there are for ground flax only. i usually buy whole flax and ground it myself so that it's easier to use in various recipes. i tried once to use whole flax to make asian stir-fry noodles in replacement of peanuts or cashew. it doesn't taste as good probably i didn't roast them with salt. but you may try it to see if you like it or not. sorry couldn't help much.....

Thanks, you were a great help. The stir fry is someting I will defintely try. It sounds great. Do you think it would be best to toast them first? Thanks again.

yeah i think so - you know most peanuts/cashew we bought from the store are usually roasted with salt - so i thought i would try to do the same for whole flax next time when i try it cook it in asian dish. also it may be nice to mix toasted whole flax with other nuts as trail mix. just a thought too!!

I have been using ground flax seed regularly for quite a while now and believe it to be a fantastic food. Ive got a condition called ulcerative colitis and I think it has helped alleviate symptoms of this condition tremendously. As youve probably read yourself flax is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids along with dietary fibre, minerals and beneficial lignans.

I dont know if using the whole seed is such a great idea as I have read that the tough outer seed coat avoids digestion. Also if I understand things correctly polyunsaturated fats like flax seed are very susceptible to damage from heat and light so high temperature cooking (as in stir frying) is not advisable.

My favourite recipe for ground flax is as follows. I have it every morning for breakfast and it tastes great biggrin.gif/

3 tablespoons or so of ground flax seeds
tablespoon of sundried sultanas
2-3 organic unsulphured prunes
spoon of sunflower seeds
2-3 dried unsulphured turkish apricots
generous handful of fresh nuts. ( I like a mix of macadamia, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts)
2 small cups of filtered water approx

Put all the ingredients in a largish breakfast bowl and leave to soak overnight. The sweetness of the fruit is taken up by the soak water. Serve with yoghurt in the morning. You can use whatever combo of fruit and nuts that you prefer.
