Hi readers,

In February 2006 Professor Sheila Bingham led a study that established the link by which red meat can cause bowel cancer. For many decades researchers have believed red meat caused colon cancer but finding how it did it has been a big problem. This was the first time a proven marker of DNA damage in cells, known to cause cancer, has been found that could be directly linked to red meat.

Looking for the first sign of cancer throughout the colon and intestines has been a huge problem for researchers. In this study volunteers were placed on a vegetarian diet, a high red meat diet 420grms daily and a high red meat/ high fibre diet in a simple randomised crossover study. They were housed in a suite for the study duration, all meals were prepared for them and all samples taken and analysed.

Biopsies were taken from the colon walls and the cancer link was proven, people eating a high red meat diet were found to have significantly more damaged DNA cells than the vegetarian diet. The high red meat and high fibre diet were intermediate risk.

This study followed hard on the heels of a large European study of 478040 men/women aged 25 to 70 from ten European countries also led by Bingham in 2005. In this study processed meat was also included, processed meat has also been a suspect in the cancer causing stakes for a long time. The same results were achieved here as well.

People who ate two servings or 160grms of red meat per day and/ or processed meat were 35% more likely to develop bowel or colon cancer than those that only ate 20 grms.

Chicken had no effect and fish reduced the risk.

I wrote this out of respect to Professor Sheila Bingham (she married Rodwell later) who died from Melanoma 17/7/09, she did some great work.

All you can eat

In a nutshell, here are the highlights from the red meat study that appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association:

American Cancer Society (ACS) researchers collected ten years of dietary and medical data from nearly 150,000 subjects over the age of 50. The data was analysed to assess a relationship between meat intake and colorectal cancer. A possible link between the two has been indicated in some studies but inconclusive in others.

The ACS team reported the following results:

* Those who consumed the largest amount of meat over ten years had a 30 percent higher risk of colon cancer compared to subjects who reported eating the least amount of meat
* Those who consumed the largest amount of PROCESSED meat had a 50 percent higher risk of colon cancer
* Colorectal cancer risk from eating red or processed meat on a regular basis (three ounces per day) is lower than the risk associated with obesity and physical activity
* Long-term consumption of poultry and fish was associated with a slightly lower risk of colorectal cancer

The ACS researchers included pork, along with beef and lamb, as red meat. Processed meat included bacon, cold cuts, hot dogs, sausage and ham.

Hi kim robin,

If you think what you have just quoted in here is science I am sorry for you, you certainly have some catching up to do. http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/ is a very biased publication to say the least, and what you have quoted as science is their distorted misrepresentation of the paper.

I am a Naturopath myself with a major in science and these are the people that I think are doing the most harm to natural medicine, if they are right about red meat why doesn't the rest of the world think they are right?

Look at what AICR says about colon cancer and red meat, and even if it was only as bad as obesity as you say, can you tell me how new cancers were discovered to be either influenced by, or caused by obesity in the word wide ten year cancer study released in November 2007. I'll tell you the answer there were 19 new cancers and the link was too strong to ignore, their words.

Did you read my post on this, Professor Sheila Bingham actually discovered the markers for colonic cancer taken as biopsies from the colon wall, these markers only appeared in the meat eaters in significant numbers.

Don't give too much credit to natural medicine, I have been involved with natural medicine as a clinician since 1981 and I find a lot of them are nuts, would not understand a scientific finding/fact if they tripped over it, this is a good website/ forum for learning, HealthCastle bring a lot of facts to the table.

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh but it is not meant to be, have a good day.
