Anyone can be infected by candidiasis but women are more prone to it because of several lifestyle habits. This infection develops in moist areas like armpit and groin area. As vaginal candidiasis is more common than any other kind of candidiasis, people consider it to be a women's disease.

Infection is aggravated when you try to self medicate without being very sure about it. In a majority of self medication cases women suffer from other severe diseases. It is therefore highly recommended to be very sure about yeast infection before trying to treat it.

Following are a few tips to identify a candidiasis

* Severe itching in the vaginal area.
* White odorless discharge from the vagina. If the discharge has some foul smell, it could be a symptom of some other disease. Consult your physician.
* Irritation in the vaginal area with redness.
* Painful urination. You may feel pain at the tip of the opening. If the pain is somewhere inside the body it may be a symptom of some other disease.
* You might feel sexual activity painful.

These are some of the most common symptoms of candidiasis. Once you are sure that you are suffering from yeast infection you can start the natural treatment which means that it will not recur very soon in future.

Candidiasis is an infection caused by a group of microscopic fungi or yeast. There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common being Candida albicans. These fungi live on all surfaces of our bodies. Under certain conditions, they can become so numerous they cause infections, particularly in warm and moist areas. Examples of such infections are vaginal yeast infections, thrush, skin and diaper rash, and nailbed infections.

Hi Guys,

Rather than rush out and buy useless products, that in most cases wont cure the problem, why don't you attempt to find out why you are suffering from this malady in the first place?

In normal healthy people candida only represents a minor localised problem, however if you have a compromised immune system because of a serious health problem such as AIDS, diabetes, mononucleosis, cancer, steroid use, major stress or nutrient deficiency, then research shows about 15% of these people will experience a systemic illness caused by candida species.

In a New Zealand study of 1009 healthy women 19% had vaginal candida and didn't know it, no symptoms whatsoever. Incidently I gave serious thought to not quoting this paper because after 4 hours of searching for it I have given up, at least 30 websites have quoted this research but none of them provided a link to find the paper or else they provided the wrong like wikipaedia .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidiasis

From 1976 to about 1998 Naturopaths, myself included, merely treated this condition with Pau dArco, Garlic, Yoghurt etc, but most of the time the patients who were suffering the most, allegedly from this condition, continued to do the run around from practitioner to practitioner, and never being cured, some of the worst cases also had the worst lifestyles, drug, alcohol abuse which usually led to some form of anxiety disorder (major stress), which compromised the immune system creating a self perpetuating syndrome if you like.

In the late 1990's the world of practitioners got a whole lot smarter with the advent of evidence based medicine, and we bathed in it's healthy glow, we now could see evidence for our treatments, and did not have to rely on biased information from supplement manufacturers, but it didn't last, there was simply too much money to be made out of telling lies, and the pharmaceutical companies were the first to learn how to exploit the evidence based medicine paradigm.

They learned that you could tilt the scales by introducing a publishing bias, where you only allowed the papers giving the results you wanted to be published, meta analysis did the rest.

If you read this article, it explains that there has not been enough studies of a high enough quality to suggest any natural treatment work, at least read the conclusion posted here.from the following institutions...

Probiotics for prevention of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis: a review

Here is their conclusion......

In conclusion, it is still controversial whether probiotics can prevent recurrences of VVC, while there may be more pathophysiological basis for their effectiveness in the prevention of BV. Lactobacilli have been frequently found to co-exist with Candida in the vaginal epithelium of women with VVC, while they are significantly reduced in women with BV. Some in vitro studies and clinical trials had positive results regarding the effectiveness of some specific lactobacilli strains against C. albicans. However, most of the trials either included a small sample of women or women with no confirmed episodes of VVC or were not placebo-controlled. Moreover, there were differences among the trials regarding the strain of the tested probiotic, its dosage and the duration of treatment. It should be emphasized that the various probiotic strains have different properties and different effects on Candida; thus, results from studies testing one strain should not be extrapolated to other strains. Consequently, it is difficult to draw reliable conclusions from the existing studies. Probiotics, especially L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum RC-14, may be considered as potential empirical preventive agents in women who suffer from frequent episodes of VVC (more than three episodes per year), since adverse effects from their use are scarce, especially when the use of antifungal agents is contraindicated or is associated with adverse effects. However, more randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials with a larger sample size should be carried out, so as to clarify whether probiotics can be used effectively and safely for the prophylaxis of recurrent episodes of VVC.

My advice is to save your money and don't purchase these very suspect treatments, but find out why your system is not controlling this overgrowth, and get as healthy as you can.

A lot of the old treatments were aimed at removing sugars, yeasts and alcohol because they were presumed to foster growth of candida, but when you remove these from your diet, you have also removed a lot of junk food and bad dietary and lifestyle habits, and this alone will make you feel a lot better within a couple of weeks.

I think this is why most patients think they are getting better from the treatment and dietary suggestions.
