I often read posts on here and think to myself " If only you understood the meaning of discipline" and it is in this vein that I wrote this.
Tough Times Don’t Last Forever But Tough People Do
A couple of decades ago when you described a man as tough people assumed he traded brain cells for an adrenaline high, today this perception has changed for the better. Today’s tough people simply overcome adversity regardless of shape or form, whereas yesterday’s hero was only physically tough.
No one is guaranteed a safe passage through life free of adversity, but the old saying “What doesn’t kill you will make you tougher” has some semblance of truth to it. Adversity does not have to come in a sinister form, things like weight gain can provide enough of a problem for any health conscious person. Sticking to a weight loss plan can take some resolve but the hard people in our society take this in their stride and defeat is simply not in their vocabulary. Whatever it takes they will throw at the problem until success is achieved.
Tough people can give up bad habits such as smoking or drinking, with what appears to be ridiculous ease; they deal with traumatic events, and quickly pick up the pieces and get on with life. University study from undergraduate to doctorate degree can take more than 7 years, with barely enough money to provide any of the extras that rich kids take for granted can provide a lot of anxious moments for students, and there is no written guarantee of employment at the end. Some students overcome all of these obstacles and appear to thrive on the hardships.
A lot of research has been done on people that can maintain their positive outlook by researchers such as Martin E.P. Seligman, their findings are always the same; these people do better in life, illness, sport and academia. They have learned to deal with their demons better.
Cheers
