hello.
I don't know if this has been posted before - I got a link to an extremely useful website with a table showing just how much (or how little) chocolate or cocoa it takes to make dogs of different weights seriously ill. Most people know now that chocolate is dangerous for dogs - this site helps you understand the different levels of risk of different types of chocolate, related to the weight of the dog, and thus whether you need to seek immediate veterinary help if your pooch gets hold of some. I was shocked at the tiny amount of cocoa that could kill my little papillon.
Here is the address: The Chocolate Chart Interactive - National Geographic Magazine

My dog is about 5-6 lbs and he just ate a little more than half of a twix bar and I'm wondering if I should be worried. How long after eating chocolate would signs of serious illness show?

You can recognize that your dog has eaten a toxic dose of chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting. This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.you know you should take him to a vet...NOW! Beacuse he is small and half is easy enough to kill under a day..or so.
