Holidaymakers have survived the chaos on the highway and reached their destination safely once again, now the Christmas feast begins. Recent research has shown that 70% of middle aged men and 60% of women are fat or obese and most of these people will put on another kilo or two during this period, remember just 500 calories, (2100 kilojoules) extra per day will add up to half a kilo in weight per week, there are 3500 calories (14700 kilojoules) in one pound, a bit less than half a kilo. So what, I hear you say, well if the researchers are right the fat bomb is ticking. 1.5 million middle aged Australians are currently obese and 700,000 of them will take a heart attack inside the next twenty years. http://www.bakeridi.edu.au/Assets/Files/fatBomb_report.pdf 123,000 of these people will die, many prematurely purely because of their weight.
Gaining weight can be caused by as little as one extra carrot per day, a lousy 15 calories (63 kilojoules) more than you need, that’s less than the energy in a carrot, is all that is required to start you on the road to weight gain. There is a delicate balance; just 100 calories (4,200 kilojoules) extra per day will result in a 10-pound (4.5Kilo) gain per year. The human body functions in accord with Mayer’s First Law of Thermodynamics: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed, this means that if your energy (calorie, kilojoule) intake exceeds your energy output the excess energy will be stored as fat, on the other hand if your energy output exceeds your energy intake you will lose weight.
The message is clear reduce your energy intake and increase your energy output, pig out on calorie sparse food and eat sparingly calorie rich food. Have a merry Christmas.
Cheers and bottoms up
