Greetings and salutations to all. Ok, let me see. I know my diet needs changing, the doc says my Prevacid is at max dosage and I still have to on bad nights take over the counter Ranadine and sometimes even Gaviscon as a chaser. I can see one or two things to change, and wanted to bounce this off of someone who grasps this better than me.

Caffeen (sp?) , oy, I drink iced tea by the gallons. What if I swiched to caffeen free tea instead? I also drink cola, only two cans a day, but would it help if I switch to caffeen free cola or is the carbination another contributing factor?

Chocolate, well, don't eat *too* much of that any more, and what I do eat I try to get the sugar free stuff, though it costs more.

Don't drink coffee except the rare Star Bucks frappachino. Don't drink alcohol at all.

What else in my diet could help? I know the fatty foods but that can get to be difficult. When I make things I do my best to make it as low fat as possible, like lite mayonase (actually, Mirical Whip), but the family controls dinner and it makes it a pain in the neck. Like last night the family wanted hamburgers and naturally I had to go though all three phases up to Gaviscon and I know today I'll be on the toilet multiple times because of it. tongue.gif

I have told the family and they are real fans of the pharmisuital (sp?) companies. "Oh, you got the Prevacid, you'll be alright." is the response I get to my protests.

Anyway, any helpful info and tips would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hi Lee,

I too have had a very hard time with acid reflux in the past and have found out that it was spicey food that was doing it to me. mexican, italian, etc it didn't matter. and a few times I ended up in the ER because of it. the thing is is that if it is food that is doing this to u then u need to get away from it and quick. ur body will only take just so much before it says " Ok I have had enough for this stuff." and then the next thing that u know u have to have surgery to repair the damaged areas from the acid reflux. I don't think that anybody want to go through that.

as for the diet change it takes a big person to admit that they need to change the diet that they have. and those little changes will over time make things alot better for u. changing the caffeen in ur diet is a very big step and yes carbination is different going from regular to diet cola. but keep in mind two more things. even though u might not eat much chocolate it does have caffeen in it. and sugar turns into fat.

How do I know all of this stuff?? I have IBS and am on a IBS diet. so my eating has to be altered. but to sum it all up for just read lables and stay away from the things that will have u spending the day in the bathroom.

I hope that this all helps u.

In my case, the diet changes aren't all *easy* when I have a family that doesn't understand and in the case of one of the two who cook in the family who doesn't *want* to understand. I tell her no Mexican and she still makes the tacos and burritos.

I already drink diet sodas but will the carbonation also cause acid reflux so I should give up sodas totally or ... ?

I really wish I could find a diet guide for GERD. Though I'd love to get the stomach tied so the acid reflux isn't a big issue, but it's usually labled as an elective, they rather spend a small amount over years than a one or two time large sum to fix the problem to the point it isn't a problem any more. tongue.gif Anyway, thanks dude!

hi Lee,

hey I might of found some answers for ya. type in www.google.com. when the site comes up type in GERD Nutrition then click on search. when I did it the page popped up with alot of diets and nutrition facts about GERD. see if that helps. I did read one of the sites with the diet and it said that u shouldn't drink anything with artifical colors or flavors. meaning that the soda more then likely has to go.

I know that the diet change isn't easy. I had to go through it too and I had to force the changes in my house. I just hope that she comes to realise one day soon that she needs to change things before things get way too out of hand. and if that doesn't happen then more then likely ur going to have to fix ur own food so that u r not in pain or anything like that.

anyways I hope that the additional information that I gave u will help. 8)
