Is there any benifits of using one over the other.
The seed is quite good on cereal etc., but sometimes I don't have cereal.
With the Flax oil, it would be part of the morning pill parade.

I guess there is fiber in flax seed and little to none in flax oil? Anyone know other differences?
annie
i believe in eating the real thing laugh.gif which also gives me the fiber (i'm obsessed with fiber  ) but i think if u have heart problems, the flax oil may be more "medicinal" than the seeds as they are more concentrated. JMT

The difference between eating the raw flax seeds or eating the oil is a very important question.

As an oil producer I have not yet found the ideal and perfect way to extract the oil at a temperature under 45 degrees Celcius.

Any oil extracted at a temperature above 35 degrees Celcius is of NO value anymore, on the contrary it becomes harmfull.

Above 35 the esential fatty acids suffer a molecular rotation of its fragments and theoretically they becomes biologicaly inactive, in other words, from its Cis-Cis original Isomeric Configuration , Essential Fatty Acids become Trans Fatty Acids.

Anyone denying this very well known and final fact either does not know what he is talking about or has some hidden agenda in his mind.

The vulnerability and fragility of Essential and other fatty acids is so extreme that to explain it in a proper way would be difficult.

I would put it like this :

Could you take blood from a person expose it to light, oxigen and heat above 36.8 degrees centigrade , reinject it in a person;s blood stream and expect it to maintain life???

The same goes for Essential Fatty Acids, as everyone knows these are the precursors of Prostaglandins and Hormones, the raw material that builds blood cell membranes, regulate osmosis has so many functions and acctivities.

The modern methods of oil extraction are too agressive, even when we talk about Virgin, Extra, Natural Cold Pressed oils.

The friction caused by Flax in order to extract its oil is the main cause of heating, also because the seed is hard.

So to give you a correct answer I belive you should soak flax for some hours and eat it very slowly chewing very well.

No grinding or blending, carefull chewing is the ideal.

By the way, I use the Komet Machine, from Oekotec to produce my oils, it is the best machine in the world. I can extract Sesame oil at less than 25 degrees Celcius, Sunflower at less than 20, but Flax ,
impossible. Whoever says the oposite is not being honest.

Also instead of Flax for Omega 3 you can have Walnuts.

Hey Ivan. Thanks for a really interesting post. I find flax seed is much more agreeable for me than the oil, which I cant tolerate. I have a digestive condition called Ulcerative Colitis so Im probably more sensitive to things than most however. I grind my flax seeds for a few seconds in a coffee grinder and then soak them overnight with some prunes, sultanas, sunflower seeds and some nuts. With yoghurt it makes a really nice breakfast.

Im a little curious why grinding them for a short time would be detrimental. Is it the exposure to light, oxygen ? Also if you eat the whole seed Im a little skeptical whether you can your still obtain the nutrients given the tough outer coating of the seed, however well you chew.

Cheers for any insights.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that there are beneficial substances in whole flax seed called lignans that are not found in the oil. According to Udo Erasmus in his well known book on dietary fats these posess anti viral, anti microbial and anti cancer properties. You can check out pubmed to verify these claims. Apparently flax seed contains 100 times the quantity of lignans as the next best source which is wheat bran.

what are the all the numerical nutritive values of ground flax seeds
annie

hi

ground flax seed is preferred. eating the whole food is always better than an isolated component of the food i.e. oil. ground flax seed is a good source of fiber including soluble, lignans and healthy fat. our requirements for the fat found in flax (linolenic acid) is small and ground flax provides more than enough i.e. 1.8 grams per 1 tablespoon, whereas 1 tablespoon of flax oil has 8 grams. we need to balance our omega 6 fats with our omega 3s.

hi dougiec thanks for the numbers laugh.gif

Ivan, could you kindly take a quick glance at this terribly long article about flax oil and cancer. I'd really like to know what you think. Although I am over simplifying, it claims that flax oil (not seed) can prevent cancer as well as shrink malignant tumors.
