I am 27 and taking a PPI though still having bad reflux symptoms. I am also taking aloe vera. I have a healthy diet though read so many conflicting ideas about what to eat or not to eat!
I am really hoping to see some light at the end of the tunnel! Has anybody successfully gotten rid of their acid reflux or lessened it by changing their eating habits?
Please help

welcome to the board! acid reflux is a tough one. i have many patients who can manage their symptoms successfully with good eating habits alone (including my own husband). but my own dad, unfortunately, cannot manage it by diet alone. many of my uncles also suffer from acid reflux so it runs in his family. he has been taking PPI for a very long time. what i learn from him is that for those who suffer from severe GERD, one must try a few brands of PPI before knowing which one works for them; also meds alone don't work either so must be coupled with good eating habits. sorry it doesn't sound too encouraging.....what i'm suggesting is that good eating habit definitely helps and the degree depends on individual.

Hi there jowalker
I also have had acid reflux and gastritis! They thought I had an ulcer, but it was discovered to be bad gastritis when they investigated with a li'l endoscopy!
I found that I couldnt take Losec because it made me feel spaced out and I couldnt function properly. It also made the acid reflux and pain come back even worse when the effects of it subsided.
I am into alternative therapies because I have found that conventional ones dont work so well for me. I found Slippery Elm Bark powder.
This plant has much mucilage. It soothes the mucous membranes of the body (throat, stomach especially). It coats the stomach lining and makes it feel much better and less irritated.
If you want to get it, you have to ensure you get a good quality one. I am not sure where you are, or what brands you have, but some of the powders are filled with other stuff, so wont be as beneficial. It is expensive too. But it worked for me and it worked for a friend's husband too. You should get it from a reputable health food store.
It becomes really gluggy when mixed with cold water, so you need to mix it with hot water, a little at a time, then add a little juice to it (not orange juice, as that is too acidic, but maybe apricot nectar, or mago nectar, which is what I use), stirring all the time and drink it. Without the juice, I find the taste rather like eating paper, not very apetising. The juice makes it taste nicer...
Hope that helps....

Thanks for the help. My diet has certainly helped so far. I have looked into reflux over the last few weeks and have now managed to cut down on the PPI tablets. It is day 6 and I am feeling better with less symptoms than before.

Good on you!! Hope you continue to manage your gastritis and dont have to take medicine in the future.
The thing that helps for me, is stress reduction. As soon as I get stressed, there comes the stomach pains!!
Keep eating what you're eating and continue to get better!!
Ciao
