My husband asked me today how to read the nutrition label on something and so I looked up info. on the Internet and came across this website. I read through the information and understand that the label is based on a 2000 calorie diet. Here is the sentence I'm a little confused about..." If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, you should focus on the amount of total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. Choose products containing less than 20% Daily Values for fat, cholesterol and sodium. " I then looked at the nutrition label that was on the page as an example and it had "Saturated Fat 3g 15%", Trans Fat 3g but NO %, and sodium 470 mg @ 20%". After having read everything I know that Trans Fats aren't good but how may grams are ok? Is this 3g too much? I know I want to stay away from all trans fat but why isn't a % given here? blink.gif

Welcome Colbres to our free nutrition forum! You are definitely not alone wondering about the recommended level for trans fat. The reason you cannot find %DV for trans fat is because there is really no recommended level for it. In April 2004, the FDA Food Advisory Committee voted in favor of recommending that trans fatty acid intake level be reduced to "less than 1% of energy (2g per day of a 2000 kcal diet)". However, this is not an official recommendation. http://www.healthcastle.com/trans.shtml

Staying away from the fast food chains is effective in minimizing trans fat intake. In addition, trans fat is found in packaged foods. Hence, check the labels when comparing products. Choose one with the lowest amounts of Saturated + Trans fat if possible. http://www.healthcastle.com/trans-fat-packaged-food.shtml

Hope it helps.

If you read Gloria's post it was pointed to an excellent article that broke down trans fat pretty good for weight loss and healthy living. Try to consume less as possible as they are hard on your body.
