Hi to everyone,

I've been taking Fosamax and a calcium + Vit D supplement prescribed by the doctor for probably 3 years now. Recently I looked on the info sheet of the calcium supp and saw it contained 'aspartame'. Of course I don't want anymore of that in my body and as the doctor can't find me one without it, I began to seach the internet.
During my reading, I can see the importance of adding magnesium too.

I shoule add that although I'm Engish I actually live in Spain and so wonder if the added aspartame is just a problem with the Spanish companies?
So my question is, does anyone know/use a really good supp that they can recommend?

Many thanks.
Gloria
Welcome to the board Janet. Brands here in North America are likely quite different from those available in Europe, so I'm afraid that I cannot recommend brands. Often times we don't need to buy brand names, many drugstore brands have the same (or similar) ingredients. To look for a good Cal/D supplement, you may need to check the elemental calcium amount i.e. does it offer enough calcium to meet your needs? The more non-calcium ingredients (such as Vitamin D/ Magnesium / Vit K etc), the less calcium it will usually contain as there is only so much one pill can hold smile.gif

There is a company here in Canada that has a naturally sourced calcium.

We have patents in Spain for specific products but I don't know who distributes it in Spain.

You could inquire online.

Thanks Randy for that info. Unfortunately I'm not able to tolerate milk per se.
However, locally I have managed to find a supplement called 'Coral Calcio' Sango de Okinawa, Japan. It contains Vit D and Magnesium, so am trying that to see how I get on.
My levels are quite high at the moment and so I would like to keep it that way.
Thanks for your help and advice.

This is a lactose and fat free supplement. Just so you are aware.
Totally safe for you unless you have specific milk protein allergies or have had a transplant.

Randy, I did look at those sites but when I saw that they were milk derived I thought they wouldn't suit me.
All I know is that for whatever reason I had to stop drinking milk etc about 30+ years ago. It made me feel really sick and gave me pains in the stomach. For about the last 14 years I've used Soya milk.

Your calcium supplement contains aspartame? ohmy.gif Wow, would never have guessed that.

I see lots of calcium + magnesium supplements at the local drugstore. Next time, I will have to check if any of them contain aspartame. Very interesting but still in shock!

Hi Bowmah,
Yes it was a shock to me too because it wasn't actually listed on the box but on the info leaflet inside.
Another worrying factor is, that my GP thinks that there is nothing wrong with Aspartame!!! huh.gif
Hence my search for an alterative, as all others he has prescribed contains it too. Maybe it's just here in Spain?? But people need to be aware of it I feel.

I am not sure why a calcium supplement would contain aspartame. Some of them do contain sucrose but most do not. I went to drugstore.com and found 2 typical calcium supplements: Here they are:

Nature's Made Calcium + Magnesium

Caltrate Calcium + Vit D

Noticed that they ship to 160 countries world wide. Maybe give them a try! Good luck!

Hi Randy,

you seem to be well informed in calcium supplementation, I have noticed and enjoyed your posts in these forums. I did not know about your natural calcium product from immunotec.com or I might have tried it first.

I have just started another natural calcium supplement called Algaecal. It is a plant sourced calcium, and it is combined with vitamin d3 and k2 and some other minerals I think. Have you heard of this product and if you have can you please give me your opinion on it?

Thanks

Hi Janet and Co,
What about all of the dietary sources of Calcium, such as Sardines, muscle meats etc, I think you should always exhaust the possibility of getting it from the diet before supplements are used. Research over the past few years here in Australia hasn't been very kind to supplements almost always proving they don't do what they claim to do.

More than calcium is needed in the prevention of osteoporosis. First of all you will definately need magnesium to help absorb the calcium.
Many other nutriens also go into increasing bone health, like vitamin D, vitamin K, strontium, boron and tons of others, and don't forgert exercise and diet.
I use a cool tool that I found on the internet to help me, it is called the bone health calculator. It gives you a reading of important bone building nutrients you are getting from your diet, and helps you try to improve.
It is easy to use and free! The site it is on does promote and sell a calcium supplement, but i do not use supplements. Lucky for me though there is no pressure to buy even when using thier software. just download and go. Bone Health Calculator

Thanks for the information melaque1. I've been a bit worried about osteoporosis and actively looking or a bone calculator. It's hard to find a site that provides helpful information without trying to sell something.
