This is my own success story. I took it directly off the website that I'm building. If anyone wants to take a look at this website, it can be found at www.cancertips.org.
Diagnosis
My name is David. I am a very avid soccer player. For a long time, I kept having pain in my right knee. So we did the typical, thinking it was some soccer injury that I never let completley heal: I iced it, rested it, and took advil for the pain. However, during the later summer and early fall of 2003, the pain became too painful when I was active. So I had an x-ray taken.
On October 9th, 2003, I had a surgical biopsy on the tumor that was found in my knee. A few days later, I got the phone call; it was cancer. The first diagnosis was Pre-B cell lympho-blastic lymphoma. When this diagnosis came in, my doctors wanted me to start two years of chemotherapy immediatley. Instead of following the doctors' recomendations to start right away, we decided to get a second opinion. As anybody would, We also wanted to do some research on any alternative treatments. My mom was the biggest proponent for a second opinion, and fought our doctors to hold off on beginning chemo. It was worth it.
We were put in touch with the National Institute of Health, which is a government program funded by tax-payers' money. They agreed to give us their diagnosis for free! When their diagnosis came back, it was large B-cell lymphoma. One of the world's best lymphoma pathologists made the diagnosis. Because of this, we obviously took her word.
Treatment
During the fall, I found a local nutrionist who put me on a strict diet, and put me on a lot of supplements. The goal was to build up my body's immune system, and strengthen it so that when or if I did get chemo, I would be albe to stay healthy and strong. We continued to look for different treatment options, going to different doctors, and we couldn't find what we wanted. Finally, we were put in touch with a retired oncologist in Virginia, who referred us to a woman who had authored a book about her cancer experience and lived near us. We then found what we were looking for.
She put us in touch with a small medical center in the northern suburbs of Chicago. The Block Medical Center has an integrative approach to treatments - along with chemo, they strss diet, supplements, excercise, and much more. After taking a trip, we knew it was the right place to be.
In the spring of 2004, I began my 1st of 4 rounds of chemotherapy. As well as nutrition, the Block Medical Center has a different way of administering one of the certain chemo agents. Instead of recieving it quickly in a two hour period like most doctors do, they designed a small, portable pump that would slowly pump the same amount of chemo into a person for 72 hours. It worked! The side effects I had were not nearly as bad as I was expecing them to be. As of Thursday, June 4th, 2004, I finished my last week of chemotherapy.
Along side the treatments
Throughout the fall, spring, and early summer, I was blessed to have many friends and family reach out. Many prayers were offered up on my behalf. God was faithful and good. He continued to provide for us at the times we needed most. An example of this is that we were put in touch with some great resources. Angel Flights (see www.cancertips.org/resources.php) ended up giving me two trips of Chicago and back. An organization helped cover our bills. But most importantly, the prayers of many people were offered up on my behalf.
I am now doing great, and am staying extremely busy with work, etc. I am also staying busy working on this site. I hope and pray that it will be of good resources and encouragement to someone affected by cancer - either a patient themselves, or a friend or family member.
