Is it good to have dried fruits, such as dried guava? I like to eat dried guava as snack, however i realize that dried guava is riched in sugar? Any comment on this? Thanks.

Hi Rachel,
Interesting you should ask about dried fruit-I've found myself snacking on dried apple rings lately.
Dried fruits usually have more calories and sugar because the dehydration process removes so much of the water normally found in the fresh fruit. That missing water would normally make the fresh fruit larger than the dried fruit, so there would be more pieces of dried fruit in the same serving. Thankfully this means added sugars aren't always added to the dried fruit-we just have to continue to check the ingredient lists on the packages to notice if sugar was added or just contain sugars naturally found in the fruit.

Rachel,

Tracey is right. When you eat dried fruit, most of the commercial products do not add any extra sugar. Yes, your dried guava will taste very sweet due to the high concentration of sugar after moisture is removed. But concentration is also relative. 1 gram of sugar in 10 ml of water is going to taste much sweeter than 1 gram of sugar in a 250 ml of water.

That being said, it's easy to eat alot of dried fruit as compared to their fresh counterparts. Not sure if it's a good thing that I remembered eating half a bag of a commercially dried mangoes on a road trip (in 1 sitting) but that is equivalent to almost 10 fresh mangoes! laugh.gif Sweet AND yummy!

I have never eaten dried guava, only fresh ones. I wonder what the dried ones taste like!

HI Rachel,

They (our forefathers) said one should eat the fruit and vegetable in its pure form only.
They also said that one should it only the seasons fruit and vegetable only.
Of course, dreid fruits have more content of sugar.
Or try to see on the label if the pack does not contain additional sugar etc.

Hi,

Fresh fruits are always the first choice for me, and unsweetened dried fruits the next best choice if fresh ones are not available! I think most of the nutrients in dried fruits will be remained, except that water is taken out (they are a good snack when travelling). Just check the labels to make sure that they are unsweetened biggrin.gif

Hi People,
In the dehydration process I would have imagined that they would lose quite a bit of the water soluble vitamins, how do they attempt to control this, or isn't it a problem?
