sad.gif I have chronic renal (kidney) failure and most of the foods that are rich in iron, or fruits rich in vitamin c are not good for my kidneys. Along with the leukemia and loss of blood from the esophagus, I haven't much of an appitite. I do noot eat meat. Beans, lagumes, etc. are restricted from my renal diet. Oranges, bannans, and other fruits except watermellon and apples I should not consume. So I am between a rock and a hard place. Also, I shouldn't eat dairy products. And wheat and brand is off limits, also. I have been loseing about 4 to 5 pounds a week because I just don't eat enough to keep my weight up. And I am tired, fatigued, niight sweats and itching. I tell the doc this, and he says just follow t"the diet". Have you any lsuggestions of foods, or menues? I would surely appreciate it.

Boy, I can certainly understand your frustration, particularly since NO ONE has replied to your plea mad.gif !

I came to this site hoping to get some more information about RENAL FAILURE DIETS, since this site is supposed to be sponosored primarily by "registered dieticians."

So far, it has been a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!

I also have chronic kidney failure, as well as hyperparathyroidism, a defective heart (from birth), congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, have had several strokes, also have diabetes and multiple sclerosis!

My nephrologist (kidney doctor) is totally useless regarding any
assistance in dieting, except to issue commands:
NO dairy whatsoever
NO grains or nuts
LOW/NO sodium
EXTREMELY LOW protein, potassium and phosphorus
LIMIT caffeine (2 cups of coffee or tea per day only).

About the only thing I can have is plain lettuce and apples (and then
only ONE small apple a day! Oh, I can have up to 10 (count 'em) grapes a day, too. WOW! AND I can drink all the plain water I want/can...

SIGH, it certainly is a totally boring menu wacko.gif, and we certainly do need HELP!! It is very depressing to try to "live" with this disease, the extremely limited diet and the health conditions (fatigue, night sweats, etc.) that along come with it!!

Do you think anyone will EVER respond...??!!

Hi motherpatricia and lakotakat,

This is a very serious condition and the reason most sensible people would not respond is simply because no advice is much better than incorrect advice, and your Dr working with your Nutritionist/Dietitian should taylor make a diet for you. My brother- in-law has had 2 kidney transplants in the past 38 years and I know how serious this is, and how quickly circumstances change. Everything has to be controlled and in most cases reduced- protein, potassium, sodium etc. The questions you have asked on here should be asked to a dietitian working on kidney failure and knows your history and is in close proximity to you in case things go wrong.
There is a website here in Australia which may help a bit. I can understand your frustrations with this problem but try not to get "snarly"with the dietitians on here they do a great job.

Hello, John! biggrin.gif

I wasn't being "snarly" per se, but please note that you are the very first to reply (after myself) to motherpatricia in well over 6 months! But I also was addressing a very serious problem that we are both "enduring" with a good deal of frustration and anxiety.

Due to my own health problems, my "nephrologist" has already told me that I should not hope at all for a transplant. I have just too many problems, as well as being "older" at nearly 60. I had a number of blood transfusions when I had several heart surgeries, so I "present" with a "compromised and complicated" antibody blood element. He also stated that since I have several drug allergies, I would no doubt have great difficulty with antirejection drugs. So he just issues his diet commands, "ups" my "Sensipar" medication and ignores the entire issue of my hyperparathyroidism!

My frustrations are also aggravated by the dirth of diet information NOT available for a person just a small step away from dialysis. Even though I live in an urban area of over half a million people within a 30 mile radius, there are few physicians who will "take me on" having only Medicare, not any conventional insurance plan! Consequently, I haven't been able to "secure" an appointment with a professional dietician, either!

So I really don't have a "health team" to work with!! That advice sounds so simple, doesn't it, when it is possible/available?!

I thank you very much for your sympathy, understanding, input, and also for the website!
