can anyone helpp me with this. Why is it recommended for an infant to get complementary food after six months
Gloria
hi josy, there are several reasons but the 2 main reasons are 1) slowly wean off breast milk/formula so that the baby can pretty much eat "normal" food by 1 year of age. doing this slowly can help baby get used to the aroma, texture and taste of our "normal" food as well as for the teeth development. we may still need to provide bite-sized food for easy chewing/swallowing, but the baby will be exposed to a wide variety of food. 2) for nutritional reason. baby grows rapidly in the last 6 months of the first year (more rapidly than the first 6 months). it's rather difficult for the baby to drink so much liquid (as breast milk/formula) as the only source of food to meet the changing nutritional needs.

cheers
