Fighting Menopause Symptoms with Supplements

And with so many supplements available, it can be hard to decide which you should take. Many supplements claim to offer amazing health benefits, so which one is right for you?

Dr. Janet Horn and Dr. Robin H. Miller, authors of The Smart Woman's Guide to Midlife & Beyond have created a list of some of the best supplements for treating menopause symptoms. While these supplements may help, you should always consult a physician before taking anything.

Suggested Supplements for Menopause Symptoms:

  • Black Cohosh: Blach cohosh is used to treat a variety of menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes. (Suggested dose: 40-80 mg/day)
  • Green Tea: This popular beverage is also sold as an extract, but drinking green tea is just as beneficial. Green tea is used to treat inflammation due to arthritis, as well as being highly touted in cancer prevention and treatment, particularly breast cancer. (Suggested dose: 300-400 mg/day)
  • Turmeric: This supplement is the principle ingredient in curry powder and acts as anti-inflammatory. In addition, is it used to treat digestive problems and may help improve memory. (Suggested dose: 750 mg-1.5 grams/day)
  • Coenzyme Q10: This vitamin is found naturally in the body, but levels decrease with age. It may decrease blood pressure, as well as help those with angina improve exercise tolerance. (Suggested dose: 60 mg/day)
  • Valerian Root: This supplement acts as a mild sedative and is used in the treatment of insomnia due to hot flashes. (Suggested dose: 600 mg taken one to two hours before sleep)
  • S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe): This substance is found naturally in the body and acts as an antioxidant. When taken as a supplement it is used to treat osteoarthritis and has also been shown to significantly help battle depression. (Suggested dose: 400-1600mg/day)
  • Ginkgo Biloba: This herb is a potent antioxidant that increases blood flow and may also help with improving memory. (Suggested dose: 120-240 mg/day)

It is best to research any supplement thoroughly before you start taking it. Make sure that any supplements you plan to take will not interfere with your other medications. Always speak with your doctor prior to taking any supplements.
