Expert Tips Make Weight Loss Your Easiest Healthy Resolution

(Bellingham, WA, Dec 18) - Losing weight is a common resolution, made with great intentions. But resorting to fad diets or starvation techniques can zap motivation and leave dieters hungry and depressed.

Women are the most likely victims of fad diets, according to nutrition expert Gloria Tsang. "We're so busy these days that even thinking about healthy eating can seem like too much," said Tsang, who founded online nutrition community www.HealthCastle.com in 1997.

"Fad diets or starvation seem easy, but the truth is these strategies are bad for you - and they just don't work", Tsang said.

She suggested the following simple, sensible steps that can help even the busiest woman work towards a healthy resolution of losing weight - without investing a lot of time or feeling deprived:

  • Avoid processed meats. Instead of high-fat deli slices, use leftover chicken breast or fish from your dinner to make a healthy sandwich for lunch.
  • Load up on colorful veggies. Veggies with lots of color offer the best nutrition. They're filling, high in fiber, and low in calories.
  • Snack on fresh or dried fruits. They satisfy your sweet tooth without a ton of calories. Mix dried fruits with nuts to add crunch.
  • Avoid refined grains. White bread and rice have fewer nutrients and fiber than their whole grain cousins. Eat whole grains instead for a healthy nutrition punch.
  • Munch on popcorn. Popcorn is a whole grain food that contains fiber and antioxidants, but hardly any calories. Just don't smother it in butter.
  • Never skip breakfast. If you're short on time, a simple bowl of whole wheat cereal with milk and cut-up fruit gives your day a perfect start.
  • Drink water. Soda, juice, and specialty coffees contain empty calories. Water is better for your body and it's calorie-free. Carry a bottle everywhere.
  • Don't cut out everything you like. Allow yourself the occasional treat, and you're less likely to feel deprived and cranky. But plan your treats and don't indulge too often.

There's no need for crazy fads or crash diets. Simple, nutritious eating is the best way to achieve a healthy resolution weight loss goal. More healthy eating tips from registered dietitians are available at www.HealthCastle.com.
