Nutrition Month 2010:
How To Convert Your Dessert Into A Healthier Version
Is there anyone who doesn't love dessert?
You can still enjoy your favorite cookies, cakes, muffins, and sweetbreads while cutting calories, adding whole grains, and using healthy olive oil while baking.
Try my five tricks to fool your family, friends, and even yourself!
For every 1 cup of unhealthy fat, use 2/3 cup of pure olive oil. The monounsaturated fat found in olive oil is medically proven to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Replace white flour with whole wheat pastry flour. Pastry flour is soft yet high in fiber. Whole wheat pastry flour is available at grocery and health food stores.
Replace sour cream with fat-free yogurt. Fat-free yogurt is tangy and high in calcium.
Grab a dark chocolate candy bar and chop it up in the place of semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips. Dark chocolate is lower in fat and high in antioxidants.
Skip the frosting. Top your desserts with glazes, crumbles, or dust with sugar. You are saving fat and calories without giving up taste.
