What's the month of February without the well-loved treat synonymous with Valentine's Day? Chocolate certainly! Nutritionist David Grotto discuss the latest scientific findings on chocolate's health benefits, and the different types of chocolate available on the market today.
I remember David - he was a guest on another podcast here on healthcastle! Congrats on your second book!
I've never heard about carob before - so THANK YOU for talking about it. Will give it a try.

I was reading the transcript with David Grotto today.
I was displeased with the inuendo that Fair Trade or Organic chocolate was somehow meant to imply a higher level of flavanoids. It never was , it always was about stopping the exploitation of the folks who actually raise and harvest the crop. It is sad to see that this aspect of improving health in the world, that is letting the poorer nations have enough income to eat, is not considered a valuable thing to do. As well the disregard to the planet and our own health by not supporting organic and less chemicals in the food chain seems odd to say the least.
Healthcastle has started to identify problems with additives to processed foods and that is great. Maybe you can widen your horizons.
Thanks
Sara

Hi Sara,
I don't think David Grotto was making that inuendo, I think it was more a case of David being scientific and and not allowing an emotional attachment to take precedent over science,he was merely stating the benefits of one was not superior to the other. I am sure he would have liked to elevate organic as all of us in Natural Medicine would like to do.
I thought this was a good explanation of chocolates benefits, and I like a lot of other people thought the benefits were all due to antioxidant content and behaviour.
Cheers

Interesting new research on Flavanols, sounds impressive and beneficial. However, my question is: are flavonols the same as flavonoids, just spelled differently? Also, I totally agree on the benefits of cocoa,I love dark chocolate and suggest it to my clients as well. Currently, my favorite brands are Ghirardelli and Divine, an organic 70% cocoa chocolate which is so decadent and enjoyable. Do you know what chocolate brands are the best for having the highest flavanol content? David, I enjoyed your first book, and congratulations on your 2nd. Thank you, Patty
