We know that fish are good for us. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least 2 servings of fish a week. But we also heard that fish are contaminated with mercury, PCBs, and other chemicals. So should we eat fish? Nutritionist Jo-Ann Heslin, co-author of The Healthy Wholefoods Counter will give us the low-down on safety of fish.

Great info! I never really paid attention to fish - guess will read more fish labels and ask more questions at the farm market! Wonder if cod is safe to eat?

I love sea bass! I can eat it every day! and course sushi too - this recording makes me think about tuna sashimi. i guess i need to do some homework to find out what tuna they serve at my japanese restaurant. anyone knows?

For you who are having difficulty with this webcast here is an article she wrote I looked up and found it basically the same. Go to www.TheNutritionalExperts.com and click on past artcles and it is called Go Fish and you can read what she basically is repeating on the podcast you can't hear. i can hear the whole thing fine. jo-ann is a bit soft but i can still hear her. turn your speaker up! anyway i eat fish very often - does anyone know if shellfish is safe to eat everyday?

Great info! Elizabeth, I prefer eating fist - I don't eat shellfish often because i feel that their shell can harbor more contaminants (just my feelings, don't know if there's any scientific evidence) :-)

I listen to this informative talk , but the problem of mercury is found only in fish living in seas and oceans.Getting fish from rivers is safe.

Just eat whatever fish you want. Don't gorge yourself all of the time and you don't have to worry about mercury, etc. It's just another global-warming/cooling, cholesterol, red-meat, etceteras type of scare tactic. In moderation, eating fish is just fine. Salmon, mackeral, and sardines are the most healthy.

Dawelbeit -- That isn't quite true. Most of the mercury in our environment come from the air as a result of burning coal or garbage. Even with environmental safeguards some mercury still escapes. Eventually, rain dumps it into oceans, lakes and rivers. The form of mercury found in fish is methyl mercury. It is concentrated in the flesh of fish, so there is more in larger fish further up on food chain. Some recent research our of Australia suggests that the form of mercury found in fish may be less harmful than the form usually measured in standard tests for mercury exposure. That's good, but it makes setting safe recommendations even harder if there are many forms of mercury to consider. Large fish, even fresh water river fish, will contain some mercury.
